Mick Croft Resignation

Mick Croft has decided to stand down as Chairman of the Thanet Chess League as from the AGM. He does not think he should be involved with League business anymore because he is unlikely to feel like playing chess again. He has been involved for forty years as a player, captain and secretary within the Thanet Chess League as well as Chairman. He also holds all three posts of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer at Margate Club, from which he is also standing down.

History of the Millar Cup (contd)

Emerging from the veritable avalanche of replies to my earlier request for information regarding the Millar Cup (total response: one), I am grateful to Ian Hames for copies of press cuttings and extracts from the Ramsgate AGMs of 1946 and 1947.  Here it states clearly that at the 1946 AGM “it was agreed to enter the…..Millar Cup tournament, a cup presented by the President of the Margate Chess Club for competition between the Thanet Chess Clubs, each making a contribution towards the engraving on the cup.” In the 1947 minutes it states that Ramsgate were the first winners of the Millar Cup.

Are there any Margate members out there who can tell us any more about Mr. Millar, their President in 1946?

Incidentally, the same AGM minutes tell us that Mr. B.H.Lohmann (note the spelling) announced his decision to retire as match captain after 25 years.  We are told that he was prominent in the activities of the Kent County Chess Association and ran the county correspondance team  and that “in the numerous games he has played by post for the county side, he has never once been beaten.”

Broadstairs update

We are roughly half-way through the season and at Broadstairs we are busy juggling several competitions at once.  Two former players, Ian Hames and David Wheatley, have returned this season and we welcome them back. One innovation has been the introduction of digital clocks which has been a great success.  The club bought seven in September and such has been their popularity that five members have also bought their own!

In the Thanet competitions, we continue to find life tough in the Millar Cup, especially if David Horton is unavailable but the addition of Ian Hames on board two has been a welcome bonus.  There have been one or two close shaves in the Hargreaves Shield but we remain unbeaten at the time of writing and the recent win at Whitstable was a vital result.  Within the club, Bob Cronin leads the way in the Goodall Cup as a result of some fine performances against higher-graded opponents.  Tom Lovegrove, improving all the time, remains the one to beat in the Zielinski Shield.  The knockout competition for the John Couzens Vase has just got under way and the beauty of this competition was amply illustrated in a first-round match where Reg Pidduck, with ten minutes for the whole game, playing one of our juniors, Tawan Naepnian, who had 110 minutes, lost on time with Tawan in stalemate!

After Easter we shall begin the Summer Swiss competition and there will be the annual Blitz Tournament to follow in the summer.  The club has 21 members and will remain open every week until mid-August. New members and visitors are always welcome - Mondays at the Hilderstone.
