Does anyone know the history of the Millar Cup? When did it start? Who was Mr. Millar? It’s a long time since Broadstairs last won it but I seem to remember that the cup states that it was donated by Mr. Millar J.P. but who was he and what was his connection with Thanet chess? I’m sure Mick Croft knows but I thought it would be more interesting to throw it open this way. If someone knows, please reply.
I became interested because I have been compiling a brief - and it is brief - history of Broadstairs Chess Club and as well as few little nuggets such as George Stiggers once living a few doors away from where Reg Pidduck now lives and that Steve Guy was once a junior member at Broadstairs, I found out that in Broadstairs’ first season in the Millar Cup in 1948/49 the final record was P8 W0 D2 L6 ! Thanet travelled to Hastings in the first match of the competition and came away with an impressive victory, winning 5-1. Best result was by Terry Green, outgraded by 67 points but winning with an unstoppable mating attack. Full results can be found in ‘Tables’ > ‘Other Competitions’.

Whitstable Chess Club won their second match of the new season in the Hargreaves Shield competition by defeating Sandwich 3.5 - 0.5. Winners were Malcolm Snashall, Alan Evans and Tony Hargreaves. The next fixture is away to Bridge ‘B’ on October 27th.
Regular club nights are currently held fortnightly at the Royal British Legion and players wishing to attend should contact Secretary Malcolm Snashall on 262230 or Match Captain Tony Hargreaves on 274885 for further details.

Both the Hargreaves and Millar Cup tables have been updated, only one of the Millar Cup matches is complete at this stage but all completed games are included. The tables will be updated regularly throughout the season.
