An IMPORTANT CHANGE at Herne Bay Chess Club

Important  update folks! As the May Lodge Club has ceased trading(for the present), we have moved to:

The Herne Bay Angling Association

59-60 Central Parade Herne Bay  CT6 5JG

This is opposite the car park and close to the Clock Tower. The room is upstairs – just ask the bar staff if you need help.

Club night is still Tuesday – just turn up around 7.30 pm

NB Parking is free from 6pm – providing you park on the sea front near the May Lodge(about 1 minutes walk away). The car park opposite the club does charge up to 8pm.

We have several new young members who are keen to improve & play competitively – why not come & see what we can offer?

A number of our players come along just for the  fun &  entertainment – playing in matches is not a requirement unless you want to!

We have a keen trainer – Robert Hamilton – who is usually there at 6.30 pm

Please contact me at bernie68@rocketmail.com  or 01227-791507 for more details.

Best wishes

Bernie

Margate on the move

Margate Chess Club has now moved to the Church Hall beneath Union Church and you have to go down the hill at the side of the church (Pump Lane) and turn right (into Union Row) to find the entrance behind the black gates. The full address is:-

Union Church,
Union Crescent,
Margate,
Kent,
CT9 1NR

We still meet on Thursdays and tea and coffee making facilities are available for free.
There are 3 rooms we can use, so we can have a separate analysis room, and enough tables and chairs for league events to be held there, plus committee meetings. The venue is nice and quiet (no more noisy quizzes!) with no stairs to climb and wheelchair access too. We have been meeting there for a couple of weeks on a trial basis, and have now confirmed it as our new home. We leave the front door open until 7:30 when the clocks start, so ring the bell to be let in if you arrive later than this.
Parking is in the nearby streets and there are no restrictions after 5pm where the parking meters are in Union Crescent, with Addington Street & Addington Road (by the Post Office depot) also having places to park. There are also about 6 spaces on the opposite end of Union Row.

We used to meet here around 20 years ago, so I’m told, so we’ve “come home” effectively.

John Clarke,
Secretary of Margate Chess Club

Entering the final round of the William Jeffery Swiss competition, four players were on equal points, David Horton drew with Harry Sharples. The last game became an international event with Georges Assafs eventually gaining the win against Wilfried Hoffman. The club’s congratulations to Geoges Assaf for winning with his first appearance in the competition.

Herne Bay Chess Club – great location & friendly people

Do you live local to Herne Bay & enjoy playing chess? We have a club that meets in the May Lodge Club(Royal British Legion on the sea front near the Bun Penny)on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. We do play throughout the year, and run internal competitions. Last season we finished 3rd out of 7 teams in one division & 2nd out of 12 in the other. There are 2 leagues and opportunities to play for players of all grades and abilities.

We do have the lowest membership charges of any Thanet League Club(I believe!) – only £10 per year plus 30p a night when you attend.
