Fifteen members of Broadstairs Chess Club attended the annual Christmas Dinner at the Tartar Frigate in Broadstairs Harbour on Monday December 21st. No-one is certain when this tradition started but the dinner has been held every year since the early 1990s. Other venues have included The Royal at Ramsgate and The Fayreness at Kingsgate but the Tartar Frigate remains the most popular choice. Fifteen is the most we have ever had at the meal and reflects the popularity that Broadstairs has enjoyed in recent years. The club is on a sound footing financially, so much so that it was decided to subsidise the dinner. (All we need now is to win a few Millar Cup matches!) A great evening was enjoyed by all and there were no fewer than four quizzes to keep members entertained. Here is a sample of questions from the chess quiz:
1. In which language does the chess term ‘good move’ translate as ‘bra drag’?
2. What is ’snooker chess’?
3. Who is the longest-serving World Chess Champion?
Any ideas?
